Do you have a Godly mother? There are probably many answers to that question. Have you ever considered what the Bible has to say on this subject?
There are several passages which talk about mothers, some good, some…..not so good. In this post, we’ll be looking at the traits of Godly mothers.
These verses can give us good examples to look at. The Lord wants us through His strength to be the best mom we can be.
A Godly Mother Has Joy at the Birth of a Child
“A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world.” John 16:21 NIV
What woman is not elated at the birth of her child? Sure, there are women whose cirumstances are very difficult but most in their hearts love and cherish their children. The best for that child is on their mind.
This verse is true; childbirth is not easy. When all is over, joy replaces the pain and we are in awe of the new life granted to our care.
A Godly Mother Glorifies God
“And Mary said: ‘My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed,'” Luke 1:46-48 NIV
Have you ever thought how you would react to Mary’s situation? She is very young and about to marry. God gives her the surprise of her life. She is to have a child, not in the manner expected but by the Holy Spirit.
Her faith must have been great to except God at His Word. Think of her fears about how Joseph and her family would react. Instead of lashing out, she glorifies God in His rightful position.
Unlike Mary, we will not experience what it is like to bear the Son of God, but we do undergo unexpected trials. We too can be a Godly mother by glorifing Him and setting a good example for our children.
Sincere Faith is a Trait of a Godly Mother
“I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.” 2 Timothy 1:5 NIV
Paul is talking to Timothy about his sincere faith in the Lord. He credits Timothy’s mother and grandmother for their faith which influenced him.
People do come to the Lord without their mother’s influence. But how great is it to know as a mother you are obedient and faithful about sharing your faith to your children.
The Lord blesses us when we are faithful. Reaching out to our children and telling them about a God who loves them is one of those blessings.
Prayer is a Quality of a Godly Mother
“and she said to him, ‘Pardon me, my lord. As surely as you live, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the Lord. I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him. So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life he will be given over to the Lord.’” And he worshiped the Lord there.” 1 Samuel 1:26-28 NIV
Elkanah had two wives, Peninnah and Hannah. Peninnah was able to have children and Hannah not. Peninnah irritated Hannah because of this and made the situation worse. Each year when they went to the temple, Hannah would asked the Lord for a child. After several years, she bore Samuel. The verses above are her words to Eli the priest.
Hannah is so grateful to the Lord for answering her prayer she is dedicating Samuel to serve the Lord in the Temple.
She was a Godly mother who knew the importance of prayer. Staying in contact with the Lord adds wisdom in the training of our children. God loves a praying mother.
A Godly Mother is a Teacher
“Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.” Proverbs 1:8 NIV
According to Expositor’s Bible Commentary (Abridged Edition): Old Testament, “The son is also to follow his mother’s “teaching”. This word may be cognate to a verb meaning “to point or direct,” so that the idea of teaching might be illustrated as pointing in the right direction.”
A mother’s role as a teacher is dual. She is to make sure the child has access to learning, both from her and others. She is also instrumental in teaching her child by example.
It is not always easy to do but we have to be aware of this responsibility. Trusting the Lord to guide us is the best way and make us better examples.
A Godly Mother is Loving
“Then they can urge the younger women to love their husbands and children,” Titus 3:4 NIV
It goes without saying that a mother should love her child, this is an admonishment that it is a quality of a Godly mother.
“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 NIV
These verses are for all Christians but is a good list of attributes of a loving mother. If we teach these to our children we will have accomplished a great deal in paving their way in love.
Love is shown in many ways. Some are more affectionate than others while those that are more reserved have a knack of showering their children with love anyway. Love puts others first and is attentive.
A Godly Mother Protects Her Home
“The wise woman builds her house, but with her own hands the foolish one tears hers down.” Proverbs 14:1 NIV
A wise woman is one who goes to God’s Word to know what is expected of a mother and wife. A Godly mother is interested in what its best for her children.
A stable home life encourages stable children. They know what to expect from their mother and her habits. She is geared toward sharing her love in all ways and creating a wholesome, peaceful home life.
A Godly Mother is Prepared
“She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.” Proverbs 31:25 NIV
A virtuous and capable wife is confident as she faces the future. In the Bible, to be “clothed” with something means that it is a part of a person’s life and reveals itself in that person’s character and conduct. NKJV Wiersbe Study Bible
A mother these days wears many hats. She has children, home and many times a job to wrestle with too. When she depends on the Lord for her strength she is better able to handle the load with a smile. She loves her children and is willing to do what is needed to help.
A Godly Mother Gives Good Advice
“She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.” Proverbs 31:26 NIV
This wisdom comes from her relationship with the Lord. She spends time in God’s Word and prayer to learn what to do.
As she gains wisdom, she is able to help others around her. She is sought out for her advice, especially from her children.
A Godly Mother is Blessed
“Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her:” Proverbs 31: 28 NIV
What better blessing than to have the love of your children and even better their respect. This is not an easy task but with the Lord’s help we can do a good job.
Relying on the Lord is the answer to being a Godly Mother. Reading His Word can make a real difference in you and your children’s life.
Conclusion
Are you thinking, this mother is superwoman? I know what you mean. But the truth is we can be a Godly mother too.
God is aware of our weaknesses but is willing to help guide us to become a Godly mother. This is a woman who loves the Lord and her family. She is eager to do the best she can do.
