Thinking about What are Benefits of Submitting to God, we sometimes forget to go back to the beginning. Our relationship with God starts when we accept the wonderful benefit of having Jesus Christ as our Savior. This alone is worth everything.
John 3:16-18 NIV “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.”
Where would we be now or in eternity without this benefit of God? Yet with this astounding gift, God still gives more as we submit to Him.
What are Benefits of Submitting to God?
1. Freedom from Sin
Romans 8:9 NIV “because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.”
When Jesus Christ died and arose, He carried our sin for us. When we accept Him as Savior, our sin is gone. We no longer need to live in sin.
1 Corinthians 13:10 NIV “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”
When we face the temptation of sin, we don’t have to give in. We can ask for help, and find a way out without sinning.
1 John 1:9 NIV “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
We are not perfect this side of heaven, so when we do sin, the Lord wants us to confess it. This keeps our relationship with Him in good standing.
2. A Closer Relationship with God
John 17:3 NIV “Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.”
Knowing God is a part of eternal life. The more we submit to Him, the more we benefit from a closer relationship.
James 4:8 NIV “Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.”
God is always ready to draw near to His children. As He draws near, clear yourself of sin.
Psalm 37:3-4 NIV “Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. Take delight in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart.”
Dwell in the land, stay in close relationship with God and enjoy His protection. Delight, joy in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart. As we grow in Jesus Christ, we will not ask for things in a selfish manner. He is not going to grant anything that is not in His will.
3. Eternity in Mind
Colossians 3:2-4 NIV “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.”
As Christians we are to have an eternal perspective. This is another benefit when we are trusting Jesus regularly. We are different and we need to have our real home in mind.
Philippians 3:13-14 NIV “Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”
The Lord speaks through Paul and tells us not to worry about our past. Instead we are to move forward toward the goal of doing God’s will. How wonderful to know our past is not important but what we do in the Lord is.
4. God’s Guidance
John 16:13 NIV “But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.”
God doesn’t leave us to our own devices to live in His way. He gives us a precious gift of His Holy Spirit to guide us. We just need to listen and obey what He says.
Psalm 32:8 NIV “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.
The Lord is there, ready to teach and help us. He’s not interested in just instructing us, but showing His love for us.
Psalm 37:24-25 NIV “The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him; though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with his hand.”
God makes our steps in Him firm. We have the added benefit that He will not let us fall, He upholds us.
5. Strength in Trials
John 16:33 NIV ““I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
Jesus is speaking to His disciples and telling them what to expect in their walk with Him. He doesn’t sugar-coat it. He tells them they will have trouble, especially because of Him. In this though, He gives them the promise of His peace. This promise is for us too.
James 1:12 NIV “ Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love Him.”
God tells us we are bless when we persevere under trials. We will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to us who love Him.
Isaiah 40:29-31 NIV “He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall;but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”
God promises strength to the weak. Compared to God, that means us. The weaker we are in submitting to Him, the stronger He is. We can soar like eagles, run with weariness, walk and not wobble or faint. We have the benefit of God’s strength in our trials.
6. Protection and Provision
2 Corinthians 9:8 NIV “And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.”
A benefit of God for us is provision. He will bless us richly so that we have everything we need to do His will.
Matthew 6:33 NIV “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
When we are living in God’s will, seeking His righteousnes, He will take care of us. That is His promise.
2 Thessalonians 3:3 NIV “But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one.”
We have no need to be afraid of Satan. The Lord is faithful to protect us from him.
Psalm 46:1 NIV “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”
God promises us His strength and that He is our refuge. When is He there? Right now!
7. Peace and Rest
Matthew 11:28-30 NIV ““Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Jesus is promising to us that He is our rest. When we lean on Him, we can give our trials to Him. He sustains us and our life is better than ever.
Philippians 4:7 NIV “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
We all want peace in our lives. Christ Jesus’s peace is not like earthly peace. Once you have experienced it, you will know that it is from God. It is not like anything you have felt before. This peace will guard you heart and mind.
8. Overflowing Joy
Romans 15:13 NIV “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”
Our God is the creator of hope. It gives us joy and peace as we walk according to His will and we will also overflow with hope in our lives.
1 Peter 1:8-9 NIV “Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
Even though we have not had the privilege of seeing Jesus yet, we love Him for what He has done for us. Because we have received His salvation, we are filled with overflowing joy.
Conclusion
What a God we have!! To send His Son to die in our place for our sin. What a sacrifice! For that alone, we should be happy forever!
Yet, He still continues to give us benefits of submitting to Him. Accepting Jesus as our Savior should not stop there. We need to move forward by submitting all of our life to Him and then enjoy His benefits.
