
Ever felt alone? Of course, we all have. The best way to overcome it, is to remember what God has said,
Isaiah 41:10 NIV “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
This is a well-quoted verse, but what is it saying?
It mentions several emotions; fear, anxiety, and weakness. The answers are given in 5 promises to help us overcome them.
As the verse begins, we see that God is with us. This is what we need to remember when facing loneliness. We can overcome it and at the same time, defeat fear, anxiety and weakness.
We are going to be talking about the 5 promises which can help:
- I Am with You
- I Am Your God
- I Will Strengthen You
- I Will Help You
- I Will Uphold You with My Righteous Right Hand
I Am with You
In this promise, He talks about fear. Fear of not having anyone to relate to, protect you, encourage you, all the things we dread when we are alone.
God’s answer?
Psalm 27:1 NIV “The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid?“
When God is present, His salvation gives light to the lonely corners of your life. He removes the fear by changing your thought patterns. When your thoughts are brightened, you become more responsive to others.
Knowing God is with you helps you realize that you are never alone. He solves your loneliness with the interactions of others who care about you. Are you listening? In our loneliness we have a tendency to not be aware of what’s going on around us.
Listening to God’s voice can open our minds and hearts to others who may be suffering from the same problem. God is great about putting people together.
I Am Your God
Deuteronomy 7:9 NIV “Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; He is the faithful God, keeping His covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love Him and keep His commandments.”
Who does God say He is?
- He is God
- He is the faithful God
- Keeps His covenant of love to those who love Him and His commandments
In Isaiah 41:10, He says do not be anxious (dismayed) because I am your God. He says in the above verse that He is faithful in keeping His covenant with those He loves. Part of His covenant is fulfilling the promise to take care of you.
Philippians 4:6-7 NIV “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
To overcome the anxiety in loneliness, go to the Lord in prayer with a thankful heart. Tell Him about it and leave it in His hands. You will experience a peace that is beyond human understanding.
I Will Strengthen You
Ephesians 3:16 NIV “I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being,”
In Isaiah 41:10, He promises His strength to us. Where does it come from? Ephesians 3:16 says God gives it from His glorious riches. His strength is abundant and it comes from the Holy Spirit that believers have inside them when they trusted Jesus Christ as Savior.
Why do we struggle with using God’s wonderful strength? Can we compete with it? It’s a free gift to us and meant to be used.
When loneliness strikes, fight back. Go to the Lord and ask for help. He will remove the loneliness if you will let Him. This is His promise.
I Will Help You
2 Chronicles 32:7-8 NIV “‘Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or discouraged because of the king of Assyria and the vast army with him, for there is a greater power with us than with him. With him is only the arm of flesh, but with us is the Lord our God to help us and to fight our battles.’” And the people gained confidence from what Hezekiah the king of Judah said.”
King Hezekiah of Judah was facing a very powerful King of Assyria who was marching to Jerusalem to overtake it. He is telling the Israelites that even as strong as Assyria is, the Lord is more powerful.
Loneliness can feel very powerful and intimidating. You can feel like you are sinking and not able to surface. But as King Hezekiah said, God is more powerful than our adversaries.
Psalm 46:1 NIV “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”
God is there to help you and always present.
I Will Uphold You with My Righteous Right Hand
Psalm 89:13-14 NIV “Your arm is endowed with power; your hand is strong, your right hand exalted. Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; love and faithfulness go before you.”
Isaiah 40: 10, God upholds us with His righteous right hand. What is significant about His right hand? This confirms that God bases His decisions on justice and righteousness.
We can count on His help and strength because of His perfect character. He is strong in His love and faithfulness to you.
Don’t let loneliness cripple and rob you of joy. The Lord uses all of His resources to encourage and replace feelings of pain when these trials come.
Conclusion
Let God help you overcome the anxiety, fear and weakness of loneliness. Ask Him to help restore your joy.
Here is some practical points to help:
- Prayer– Go to the Lord at first signs of loneliness before it becomes overwhelming.
- Meditate on Isaiah 41:10 NIV- Refresh you faith in what God can do.
- Review– Go over the verses in this lesson to strengthen you.
- Join– Go to church, Bible studies or life-groups. This will get you around others of like-mind who love you.
- Serve Others– Salvation Army, Food Banks and your church can always use volunteers.
Loneliness is not uncommon, but it can lead to depression if you let it go. Turn to the Lord for help and make your life better for it.
