There are a lot of opinions out there about what trust is, how much should we trust, and who to trust in. The best place to go is God’s Word and then we don’t have to concern ourselves with opinion. To better understand, let’s look at some Bible verses about trusting in God.
Here are some questions we will be discussing:
- Why is it so hard to trust God?
- What stops us from trusting God?
- How to trust God and not fear?
- How to trust God when it doesn’t make sense?
- How to walk with God daily?
- How can I learn to trust in God?
Why is it so hard to trust God?
Galatians 5:17 NIV “For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want.”
As humans we are born with a sin nature which causes us to naturally not do what God wants us to. As Christians, we have a new nature which does want to do God’s will. Problem is, we still have a sin nature, so we can still disobey.
Yes, when we are not trusting, we are disobeying what God wants us to do. We need to confess that attitude to get back on track with trusting Him. When we are relying on ourselves, trusting God is harder.
What stops us from trusting God?
Worry
Matthew 6:25-26 NIV “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?
We all worry. But it is a sin because God tells us not to. We can get so involved in our situations and forget God is there for us. We are not trusting what He has promised.
Not knowing God’s promises
Philippians 4:19 NIV “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.”
Matthew 6:33 NIV “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
It’s very important to read God’s Word so we can know what He says. He has promised to take care of us so when we are overcome with worry, we remember who God is and what He has said.
Suffering
1 Corinthians 1:3-4 NIV Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.
When we go through this life, we will suffer. It’s not hard to become lost in our trials. Taking a deep breath and going to God’s Word to encourage us is the best answer.
Sometimes our pain can overcome the ability to think straight. Trusting God at these times can be difficult. That’s why it’s important to stay in contact with Him all the time.
How to trust God and not fear?
Philippians 4:6-7 NIV “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
- Do not be anxious about anything.
- Go to the Lord first in every situation.
- Give thanks for what He has done for you in the past.
- Tell Him what you need.
What happens? God’s peace fills your heart which transcends everything. Try it.
How to trust God when it doesn’t make sense?
Romans 8:28 NIV “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
There are some situations that are very perplexing and we wonder how it can work out. Sometimes we think about it until we want to give up.
Before we get to that stage, we need to go to the Lord in prayer and give it to Him. God promises that all things will work to the good for His children. We need to just trust Him. Don’t take it back.
How to walk with God daily?
Psalm 143:8 NIV “Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life.”
This is a Psalm of David. He wants to be refreshed in the morning knowing of God’s love because he has put his trust in Him. In that trust is his request for guidance in the way he should go. David knows his life will not prosper without God.
I love the beauty of this verse as it brings to our thoughts God’s merciful love. It also is a reminder that we should be seeking God daily for His guidance.
What is David doing here? He is spending time with the Lord.
Suggested Steps of Devotion Time
- Morning is a good time.
- Open with prayer.
- Honor and thank Him for what He has done for you.
- Read His Word and listen to what He is telling you.
- Think about what you have learned.
- Apply it to your life.
Be a regular attendee to a church that you know is teaching God’s Word. Some think it’s not important to worship God in church but it is His instruction for us to fellowship with other believers.
Hebrews 10:25 NIV “not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”
How can I learn to trust in God?
John 3:16 NIV “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
If you are a Christian, learning to trust more begins with reading God’s Word and asking Him to build your trust. Focus on verses that are about trust and learn how different people in the Bible applied God’s Word to their life.
If you do not know Jesus Christ as your personal Savior, you will need to do that to be able to understand and know what trust really is. It’s not based on human trust but God’s trust. This is what you need to do.
- Realize you are a sinner and confess it to Jesus Christ.(repent)
- Accept He is God’s Son.
- Accept that He died for your sin on the cross and took your place.
- So you can have eternal life.
Then you can begin to trust God to lead your life.
Conclusion
True trust in God cannot come by our opinion or anyone else’s. It can only come through salvation in Jesus Christ.
We learn this through what God’s Word teaches. Looking at Bible verses about trusting in God can help us see what God is saying, not opinion.
