God’s Word has the power to transform our lives by helping us to submit to God’s will. As we begin to read and study His Word, we can see how He wants us to live.
The beginning of this journey is when we accept God’s gift of salvation.
John 3:16 NIV “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
We are following God’s will when we become Christians, that is, followers of His Son, Jesus Christ. If you have not taken this step, you are unable to do God’s will.
We will be discussing verses and their meaning to help in following His will.
- Trusting God: Proverbs 3:5-6
- Fleeing Satan: James 4:7
- Do Not Conform to the World: Romans 12:1-2
- Commit Your Way to the Lord: Psalm 37:5
- Seek God’s Kingdom First: Matthew 6:33
- Keep Your Mind on Jesus: Isaiah 26:3-4
- Live by Faith: Galatians 2:20
- Conclusion: Persevere: Hebrews 10:36
Trusting God
Proverbs 3:5-6 NIV “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
How to find God’s will?:
- Trust in the Lord with all of your heart.
- Don’t let the way you think get in the way.
- Submit to Him in every part of your life.
What will happen? He will make your path in His will. Submitting will become a way of life.
Fleeing Satan
James 4:7 NIV “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
Of course the first step in resisting the devil is by submitting to God. Through God’s strength only are we able to resist and make the devil flee.
Here is God’s promise about His help when we are tempted:
1 Corinthians 10:13 NIV “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”
By submitting yourself to God, He is there to provide a path for you to escape temptation, the ways of Satan. In other words, Satan can be resisted through God’s help.
Do Not Conform to the World
Romans 12:1-2 NIV (verse 1) “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. (Verse 2) Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
This is calling for a commitment to the ways of God in verse 1. In the remaining verse, is the way to maintain that commitment. Expositor’s Bible Commentary
- Be not conformed to the ways of the world
- Be transformed by renewing your mind in God’s Word
To continue to submit to God, we need to not live according to the world. We are to be different, an example of Christ to the unbeliever.
When we follow these ways, we then can know what God’s will is.
Commit Your Way to the Lord
Psalm 37:5-6 NIV “Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn, your vindication like the noonday sun.
The Psalm is about the seeming prosperity of the wicked. David is concerned about how they seem to live their own way and have everything. The Lord tells him to trust in Him and He will eventually give the wicked their just do.
These two verses continue the instructions to overcome this envy, commit your way to the Lord. When you are rewarded for your work in the Lord, you will shine like dawn.
When we submit to God, we can give these thoughts to Him and He will take care of it.
Seek God’s Kingdom First:
Matthew 6:33 NIV “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.“
This is in the same chapter as the Lord’s Prayer. The last section of that chapter is about worry.
Seeking His kingdom is the same as submitting to God. When we get our eyes on things around us, clothing, food, and drink, it takes our eyes off His kingdom.
He tells us that if we are submitting and working for His kingdom, we are seeking Him first. He then will take care of our needs. That is His promise. I believe Him, He has always taken care of me.
An Example of Putting His Kingdom First
Romans 16:1-2 NIV “I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a deacon of the church in Cenchreae. I ask you to receive her in the Lord in a way worthy of his people and to give her any help she may need from you, for she has been the benefactor of many people, including me.”
Phoebe, was a deacon of the church in Cenchreae. Evidently she was wealthy. She put the Lord’s kingdom first by helping other Christians make it financially, one of which was Paul. This is very important because without it some Christians would have gone without supplies.
This is just one way to put the Lord’s kingdom first. The Lord does not ignore our needs. He will take care of them.
Keep Your Mind on Jesus Christ
Isaiah 26:3 NIV “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast because they trust in you.
In this verse is the promise of perfect peace. How do we get that?
- Minds that are steadfast- those who’s focus is Jesus Christ.
- Trusting Him.
Focusing on Jesus Christ is submitting to His will.
Living by Faith
Galatians 2:20 NIV “ I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”
When we except Jesus Christ as our Savior, we join with Him in His crucifixion. In this process, we die to ourselves.
We now are submitting to God’s will, living for Jesus Christ and not ourselves. He now through the Holy Spirit lives in us.
Living by faith is a way of life to Christians who are submitting to Jesus Christ.
Conclusion
The beginning of our walk with Jesus Christ, is at the moment of accepting Him as our Savior. He died for our sins so we could have this privilege.
To grow spiritually, we need to submit to God every day. When sin breaks this connection, confess it and step back in to walking with Him.
We have talked about what the Bible says helps us submit to Him and what that means in our lives.
As we pray and read God’s Word, submitting falls into place and we grow in Him. The benefits of walking with Jesus Christ is unlike anything else. He is there for you in everything. He will love, comfort, guide and give you the joy of His Presence. Remember, He lives inside of you.
Hebrews 10:36 NIV “You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.”
