Having a bad day? The day when nothing goes right or we receive news that overwhelms us. We want to go back to bed or better yet, hide under the bed.
If we are not careful, the day will escalate into sheer chaos. It usually spreads to everyone standing near us and they join in the pending disaster.
Stop moving, talking and even thinking. Take a deep breath, quiet your mind and talk to the Lord. He is prepared and ready to help.
Check Our Attitude When Having a Bad Day
Think back over the day, any new problems? Woke up on the wrong side of the bed? Is there a reason that began this spiral downturn?
Regardless of the reason, what was our reaction? Are we angry? Did we handle the situation with patience and grace? Oh welllllll, maybe not.
We all stand guilty. The Lord tells us to be slow to anger for a reason. It’s definately not good for the victim, but not good for us either. How does anger make us feel?
“My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry,” James 1:19 NIV
Maybe we need to confess to the Lord our words or actions. This can be a first step to creating calm in our day.
“f we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9 NIV
God’s Peace When We are Having a Bad Day
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7 NIV
There are many circumstances to cause anxiety. Deadlines at work, kids schedules, disturbing news, etc. It’s always a good idea to realize what the problem is.
Go to the Lord with it. We need to tell Him what is going and even how it makes us feel. He know what life is like, He’s been there. Even if we are busy, we need to ask the Lord to strengthen us, take the anxiety away. Don’t forget to have a thankful heart for His answer.
What is the answer–His peace overflows into our hearts and removes stress. What relief we can have if we only take Him up on His promise when we are having a bad day.
God’s Presence When We are Low
Need God’s presence to comfort you when having a bad day? We can forget He is there for us at any time and any place. The day becomes tangled in a web of confusion and we want to throw up our hands in defeat.
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9 NIV
Sounds like He’s saying, “Did you forget?” Yes, how can we do that? Someone with all the power of God and we forget. Thank the Lord He knows we’re human.
God’s Love When Having a Bad Day
When we take a good look at ourselves, and wonder how anyone can love us, much less the God of the universe. One of the best traits of His love, doesn’t rely on what we do, or don’t do.
“But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.” Ephesians 2;4-5 NIV
The definition of grace according to Dictionary of Bible Themes is “the unmerited favour of God, made known through Jesus Christ, and expressed supremely in the redemption and full forgiveness of sinners through faith in Jesus Christ.”
Grace cannot be earned, neither can His love. It is unconditional and comes by Him only. We don’t have to worry that He stops loving us when we sin. He does want us to confess so our relationship can thrive.
We need to come to Him and experience the perfect love of God. When we are having a bad day, what better source to heal our wounds than to communicate with God.
Seeking God’s Strength
Prayer requests have often included a petition for God’s strength. When we are vunerable and weak, whether physically, emotionally or even spiritually, we reach for someone whom we consider strong. How strong is our God?
“On the day I called, you answered me; my strength of soul you increased.” Psalm 138:3 ESV
Psalm 138 was written by David in thankfulness to the God who rescued him. He knew where to go for his strength. We need to do the same.
We Need God’s Perspective When Having a Bad Day
“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” James 1:2-4 NIV
Ever wake up and everything looks bad? Of course, we all do. As the day progresses it goes from bad to worse because our perspective was set at the beginning of the day and we keep right on adding to it. By the end of the day, we are exhausted from such a bad vantage point.
If we would stop and see that our perspective is the problem, we can correct it, save the day, so to speak. Feels impossible, having a bad day is just what it says.
God has advice for that too. He tells us to read His Word and apply it to our lives.
“This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” Psalm 118:24 ESV
Standing back and looking through God’s glasses changes our outlook. We see how much He blesses us and know how rich our lives are. No, it doesn’t always take problems away but it makes it a lot easier to face them when we hand them over to the Lord.
God’s encouragement
“The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles.” The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. Psalm 34:17-18 NIV
Taking care of a sick loved one, especially those who are struggling with chronic conditions, can be very disheartening. When we are tired and discouraged, how does talking to the Lord help? He reminds us to rest.
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30 NIV
Here it is, Jesus’ Word to us when we are tired and emotionally spent. We need to remember a very important point when we read God’s Word. They are not just words but life to those that believe them. We may still have people to take care of that we wish were well. God may grant that, but if not, He will hold our hand and enable us to walk in freedom. His Word is quick and alive. If not, why would we hang on?
God’s Justice When Having a Bad Day
“The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.
Those who know your name trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you.” Psalm 9:9-10 NIV
It”s hard to overcome bad feelings when we have been unjustly accused. We know we are innocent and can’t seem to convince those who are accusing us.
Lashing out is what we want to do. We are humiliated someone would think we could do such a thing and vengence is on our mind.
The Lord tells us in this verse what to do. We are to come to Him, tell Him our feelings, even the bad ones. He is our refuge and we can trust Him to take care of the situation. Many circumstances change when waiting on the Lord. He will take care of us.
God’s Cares for Us
God is not an abstract idea. He is a person and works with us to have joy in our lives.
“Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” 1 Peter 5:6-7 NIV
The Lord wants us to put all our cares on Him. First, we need to humble ourselves and let Him do it for us. Second, we give it to Him, recognizing He is able and we are not.
Where is there anyone else who takes our burdens and leave us in rest and peace? He wants our life to be refreshed and joyful.
