Most of us think of praise as a result of gratitude for blessings in our lives, and it is. Perhaps that is why we struggle to praise during the storms.
Hebrews 13:5 NIV “Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that openly profess his name.”
There, that’s what we’ve been missing, “a sacrifice of praise”. Huh? What do we give up? Think about it.
When you are suffering under trials, you reach out to God and praise Him anyway. You are giving up your anxiety, and hopelessness, humbling yourself under the mighty hand of God. You are honoring Him regardless of your emotions.
This is why praising God in difficult situations can be your best weapon. Turning it over to the Lord in praise is the most powerful thing you can do.
Here are some of the reasons why praise is your most powerful weapon in difficult seasons:
- God is Worthy of Praise
- We are to Praise Him at All Times
- We are in God’s Presence When We Praise
- Praise is Encouraging
- There is Joy in Praising God
- Praise Elevates Us Above Our Circumstances
- Conclusion
God is Worthy of Praise
Psalm 145:3 NIV “Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; His greatness no one can fathom.”
As Christians, if we are not careful, we can become so used to hearing the word “praise” that we can lose its importance. Why do we praise the Lord?
Because He is so great, words do not do Him justice, but they are all we have to express our honor of who He is. He is the culmination of everything good: love, joy, knowledge, peace, grace, mercy and much more.
When we are focused on Him, our heart swells in praise for who He is. God is worthy of all praise.
We are to Praise Him at All Times
Psalm 34:1-3 NIV “I will extol the Lord at all times; his praise will always be on my lips. I will glory in the Lord; let the afflicted hear and rejoice. Glorify the Lord with me; let us exalt his name together.”
David wrote this Psalm at the time he pretended to be insane before Abimelek. He was in turmoil trying to get away from the leader.
Even in the midst of the stress, he offered praise to God and glorified His name. This is a “sacrifice of praise”.
When we are walking in God’s light, our hearts are ready to praise Him. Trials are an opportunity for us to praise Him in spite of our pain.
We are in God’s Presence When We Praise
Psalm 100:4 NIV “Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise;
give thanks to him and praise his name.”
The most calming, pleasant place to be is in God’s presence. When you are praising God with a geniune heart, you are in the presence of God.
What better place to be to submit to God your anxiety and trials? Here you can talk to Him in freedom and gain joy in your circumstances.
Praise is Encouraging
Hebrews 10:24-25 NIV “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”
Meeting together as Christians is a very uplifting time. When our attitudes are focused on the glorification of God, we are in union with one another.
Matthew 18:20 NIV “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.”
It is a time for us to encourage one another to follow the Lord’s will. If you are facing trials, this can help you overcome the situation and push forward to do work for the Lord.
There is Joy in Praising God
Psalm 16:11 NIV “You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.”
Praise ushers you into the presence of God and in His presence is joy. As you lift God’s name up in honor, who He is becomes more apparent to you.
The presence and knowledge of God is pure joy. God is always blessing us even as we worship.
Praise Elevates Us Above Our Circumstances
Acts 16:25-28 NIV “About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everyone’s chains came loose. The jailer woke up, and when he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped. But Paul shouted, “Don’t harm yourself! We are all here!”
Paul and Silas were thrown in jail because they had cast demons out of a woman, a fortune-teller, who made money for her owners. When she was free of the demons, the owners lost their living, they complained about Paul and Silas, and they were thrown in jail.
Instead of feeling discouraged, Paul and Silas rose above their circumstances, praising and singing to the Lord. There was an earthquake, their chains fell from them, and they were free. The jailer was going to kill himself because he was responsible for the prisoners. Paul and Silas did not leave.
He took Paul and Silas to his home and bandaged their wounds. Because of Paul and Silas’s testimony of Jesus Christ, the jailer and his family became believers.
Paul and Silas depended on the Lord for their strength. They were able to give a “sacrifice of praise” and bring others to Jesus Christ.
You can do the same thing. When things become tough, go immediately to the Lord for His strength. Praise His name for the blessings He has given you in the past.
